We're surrounded by food portions we've been led to believe are normal-64-ounce sodas, personal pizzas large enough to feed several people, and steaks and pastas that fill an entire plate. No wonder obesity rates in America have reached an all-time high. We eat oversize portions, gain weight, and try the latest fad diet, which only adds to our confusion about how to lose weight.

"The best nutrition book I have read in years. Dr Lisa Young gives very practical down to earth suggestions to the novice as well as experienced dieter on nutrition, portion control and weight loss. Great overall plan for healthy eating along with an appendix of enjoyable meal menu suggestions for breakfast lunch and dinner.

The book is organized by “days” and each day readers are encouraged to focus on one component of portion control, health, or wellness. I love this as Dr. Young simplifies the key issues.

I highly recommend this book —whether you want to lose weight, become a portion pro, or get a better understanding of heath, it is packed with really useful information.

Finally Full Finally Slim 30 Days to Permanent Weight Loss One Portion at a Time Lisa R Young 9781478993025 Books Reviews

  • I am moved to write this review to let potential buyers know this is not a 30 day plan. Even though chapters are named "Day 1", "Day 2", etc. , they are just regular book chapters and do not correspond to, for example, an activity a reader should do on that day. To be specific, "Day 8" is "Right-size your dishes." Day 20 is "Sip your way to slim." So each chapter offers specific nutritional and health advice, not a step in a 30 day plan.

Probably the most disappointing thing, besides the title, is the appendix B, called "Portion Plans." There are 4 of them. Each "Plan" gives you the recommended number of servings per day and exactly one day worth of menu ideas. Ok, so which portion plan -- A, B, C, or D -- should I choose? Well, the book suggests I look back at p. 21 to find my "Finally Full, Finally Slim Number". But on p. 21, I am told that the number of servings that is right for me depends on several factors, such as gender, age, lifestyle, activity level, etc. And then offers no way to use those factors to calculate anything. This is not helpful.

I also wonder how different this book is from the author's earlier book on portion control. I am guessing not much.

On the plus side, a lot of good health information, much of it familiar to anyone who has been keeping up with the news (fill half your plate with non-starchy veg; eat mindfully). On balance, I don't think it was worth it to pay for a hardcover. I would get it from your library or wait for a lower priced edition.
  • You have to feel good about a book when the author starts off in her Introduction by saying that no miracle ingredients exist. It gives you confidence that the writer knows what she is talking about and her book will really be useful.

And that is indeed the case.

The book begins by setting the stage with a discussion of portion sizes. They have drastically increased over the past years, with serious implications for calorie consumption and weight gain. Portion sizes are the basis for the meat of the book. Control portion sizes as a way to manage how much you eat, thus losing weight.

The book quickly shifts into practical and specific advice and details. It covers portions and servings for different food groups. One thing I like about the plan in this book is that it allows you to eat unlimited amounts of non-starchy vegetables. As someone who munches on a lot of carrots, this works well for me.

Much of the advice and recommendations is organized into "days". It is a clever approach that chops a lot of material into "bite size" "nuggets". Hey, the author likes her puns, see below, so I can use some, too. A real good recommendation is to keep a food diary. The Appendices contain yet more useful material.

Author Young writes in a chatty, easy-going, personal style that makes her book easy to read. She maintains reader interest throughout. She writes in the first person, mixing in observations and tips from her own life. Dr. Young tosses out some cute puns. In a section on dairy, she says she will "milk the section". Her section on nuts includes the phrase "as nutty as it may sound". Discussing wine glasses, she says something is "crystal clear".

Finally Full, Finally Slim is a powerful, useful, practical guide to helping you lose and manage your weight. It is easy, even fun, to read. Read it once to improve your life, then periodically go back to it for reminders.
  • Easy read with practical changes to develop healthy eating habits by controlling portions within 30 days. Highly recommend it!
  • Excellent read and very informative.
A well written book about how to eat in the real world
