- Wow! I just have to put my two cents in on this "Feel Good Story". I read this book to see if it would be a good pick for my niece who is 11 years old who is learning about golf. I can honestly say that this is going to help her work through much more than just the game. She has had her fair share of struggles with her peers at school and I believe that this will help her to deal with those inner insecurities that we all feel from time to time. There are so many good lessons taught in this short story about friendship, love, hard work, perseverance, golf, diet, exercise and the social pressures that kids face in every day life, and so do us adults too. Like all good stories, it takes you up and down, makes you laugh and makes you sad, keeps you wondering how things will turn out, and ends with that "Feel Good Feeling". I love that feeling at the end of a good book or movie, and this children's book has it all. The reading is fun and full of fantasy about some very charming golf ball characters and kids and adults alike are going to fall in love with them. Kudos to Steve Brown and Amber Sellers. I will be looking for more books about "The Magic Dozen".
- I was fortunate to be in on the planning and early reading stages of this book. I am a believer in the teaching of honesty, loyalty, friendship and perseverance illustrated by the "The Magic Dozen." Sellers and Brown provide a wonderful canvas of life lessons for all ages. I look forward to sharing the antics and adventures of these special little balls with my grandchildren, who already have a love of the game of golf. I would recommend this book for any parent and school to stimulate discussion or just the joy of reading.
Be the Ball The Magic Dozen at Emerald Pond - As a former school teacher and current executive director of a residential home and family services agency for abused and abandoned children, I am delighted to add the charming antics and powerful life lessons offered by "The Magic Dozen" to our agency's library. With the help of the contents of an old box of golf balls, Brown and Sellers offer a captivating change of perspective on values such as honesty, loyalty, persistence, kindness, and healthy living. "Be the Ball The Magic Dozen at Emerald Pond" reinforces lessons that have been taught to thousands of youngsters served by our agency for almost two centuries. The story of a mysterious old box of golf balls come to life will delight and instruct every child who hears it and every adult who reads and shares it.
- I recently read this book to my 8 year old, Third Grader, who does not play golf. We both thoroughly enjoyed the book. It is filled with lessons about determination, hard-work, fitness, responsibility, kindness and, of course, the game of golf. The personified golf ball characters are all unique and engaging artifacts of the famous golfer - Ben Hogan. The memory of Ben Hogan is rekindled, as my daughter asked me; who is Ben Hogan?
This is a great read for those precious parent to child bedtime occasions. It would also make an excellent self-read, children's short novel. Encourage reading - send one to your niece, nephew, or grand kids! - What a find this book was! My 9 year old son asked if we could read a book about golf. A casual search of found brought up "The Magic Dozen." We began to read it, a chapter a night, over a few weeks. I could never have imagined the impact this little book went on to have over my son. With each obstacle the characters in the book overcame, it spurred a new conversation between us. I even began to see him referring to the positive actions of the characters and how it related to things in his everyday life at school. There are so many positive lessons contained in this book that I'd wholeheartedly recommend it to any parent. I can't believe my good fortune to have found it.
- This is a thoroughly enjoyable book with great characters, wonderfully illustrated, a warm and thought-provoking story and an ultimately valuable lesson for readers of all ages, particularly young teens. The message of a positive attitude and hard work to overcome hardships and realize dreams resonates strongly and this book teaches a valuable, but still appropriately subtle, lesson about combating childhood obesity in a setting of fun, interesting and intriguing situations all can relate to. This book should find a home in all young person's libraries of favorites and is particularly well-suited to a school or classroom reading setting.
- What a great read!!! Normally I would not take the time to write a review but I feel that this book is an exception. The book's positive messages were inspirational and the character usage was extremely creative. This book should be used as a "teaching "tool for children and adults. In fact, this is the type of book that should be made into a movie. I highly recommend this book to all ages...regardless if you play golf or not.
