Dirks, a former ordained minister in the United Methodist Church, explores the meanings of the early Christian writings and the Qu'ran in an effort to show both Muslims and Christians that their religions are much closer philosophically and even doctrinally than most people realize. In the majority of the essays he examines the Gospels and analyzes what the original Christians may have thought about certain matters such as the status of Jesus as the son of God. In one essay Dirks reaches the surprising conclusion that many of the early Christians were in disagreement about whether Jesus was actually crucified, and act which the Qu'ran denies. Annotation c. The Cross The Crescent Jerald F Dirks 9781590080023 Books Reviews

  • I agree that there is a lot of information in this book, and I think the background of the author is amazing a methodist minister who has a degree in divinity from Harvard, and later became a muslim is really amazing.

When the author wrote this book he had to tread a thin line to avoid being bias, etc.

So I agree with the high rating useful review about the research being done well, and recommend reading it. On the side of the lower starred most useful comment. You are correct in terms of some of your criticisms, mainly the title is incorrect if it claims to be a purely middle of the line dialogur comparing the traditional crisitian ideas to islam. However this book does so much more than that, this author really knows his stuff based on his background. Instead of pushing the traditional christian ideas he offers his own insightful thoughts that I found to be amazingly fascinating, and he does it based on linguistics and the literature as it is. Yes he references aprocrapha text, but honestly he even points out in the book that "aprocrapha text" were considered as religious doctrine by many different early christian groups, only later were they considered "aprocrapha text" and the reason for them being considered so is not always legitimate or clear, it usually was not purely hey this is probably a fake, many times it was hey this doesn't seem to fit the other texts to well lets get rid of it. (I am not saying this always happended but if you research the early church the later example happened way to often and included killing people who disagreed (research unitarians and their history).

Every other book will give you the typical Christian belief system which varies by sect, and read BArt Ehram if you want the typical background as has come to be believed of the church. If you want an insightful book well researched, well written and presented talking about the early christians the power struggles, different items in the scripture to consider. I highly recommend this book, as a warning if your not an open minded christian some points might sting you a little.
  • I definitely recommend this book for people who have questions regarding Christianity or would like to know how Christianity came about. This book also
explains Islam and how closely it is related to Christianity which many don't know due to all the misconceptions and negative propagandas out there!
It a must read!! You may need to read it more then once to absorb all the Information the author provides us with. This is a book that u CANNOT PUT DOWN once you open it!
  • Absolutely fantastic. If you want to know some of the early roots of Christianity in relation to Islam, then this is the book for you. Dr. Dirks is a powerhouse of information, infinitely wise and skilled at giving the history of the gospels and early Christianity. He then ties it in to Islam, giving a very powerful perspective.
  • like it
  • very informative book and it arrived quickly
  • Detailed. Erudite. Complex. You have to have some degree in divinity to understand. The author is sincere in passing on knowledge.
  • Great book
  • This one of the best in comparative study of religious dogmas and misunderstandings. A must read for understanding the prejudices that one has especially in the present day context.
